Doylestown is the county seat of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Located 25 miles north of Center City Philadelphia, the town had a population of 8,272 in 2019. Though originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape tribe of the Delaware Indians, the county was part of the tract of land granted to William Penn in 1682. An innkeeper named William Doyle who owned Doyle’s Tavern was Doylestown’s namesake. Doyle also founded 6 more taverns, though the only one still in existence is The Fountain House. Doylestown has a rich cultural diversity, a dynamic downtown and impressive architecture. The town has seen Federalist offices, Gothic revival homes and Victorian mansions. Henry Mercer, a wealthy businessman, built 3 structures in Doylestown including the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works. 

Doylestown was a professional town rather than an industrial one, due to its high elevation and lack of significant water power. The town’s residents have a strong sense of history and desire to preserve the historical elements. In the 1960s a push to tear down the dilapidated downtown area was met with successful resistance. Most historical features were saved and a volunteer group facilitated improvements. The downtown continued rebuilding, bolstered by tourists and charitable donations.

The Doylestown Fire Company No 1, pictured above, has been a volunteer organization in the town since 1879. The Company’s membership has over 100 unpaid volunteers, some of which are second and third generation members.

Quite a few notable names have been residents of Doylestown, including Stan and Jan Berenstain, authors of the Berenstain Bears, Pearl Buck, Nobel prize winning author, Oscar Hammerstein II, musical lyricist, Margaret Mead, anthropologist, and musical artist Pink. Doylestown was also the location of the 2002 movie Signs, by M. Night Shyamalan.
