Dtown Insurance is Your Independent Insurance Agent in Furlong

The area known as Furlong is located at the intersection of Edison-Furlong Road, Swamp Road, and York Rd (Route 263), on the border that separates Doylestown from Buckingham Township. Some maps, even ones published as late as 1852, noted the area as Barville or Bearville. Eventually, the Beartown Inn was sold to Colonel Elisha Wilkinson of Buckingham, who renamed it the "Green Tree Inn." At the time, an inept sign painter was commissioned to paint the sign for the newly named inn, giving the townspeople something to gossip about. The townspeople could also poke fun at the sign, as the painted trees in the sign were not recognizable as trees.

By 1832 the name of the place was commonly referred to as Green Tree. A post office was established that year, with Henry Carver as the postmaster. More name changes followed suit as the town was renamed Bushington. When Carver was succeeded two years later by William D. RuckmanEsq, the postmaster general John Foster visited Doylestown to discuss the postmaster's name with his friend, county-seat postmaster John Randall. The name was very similar to another post office elsewhere in Pennsylvania, and the task was to agree on a new name. According to George MacReynolds in Place Names in Bucks County, "... during the conversation, Foster happened to use the word 'furlong.'"
