Quite a few historic areas and features can be found in Upper Makefield Township. One of these is the Hayhurst Farm. Built in 1742, this Quaker farmhouse is the place where General John Sullivan stayed before the crossing of the Delaware during the Revolutionary War.
Bowman’s Hill Tower, completed in 1931, is a memorial to the soldiers of Washington’s army during the Revolutionary War. The tower was created from stone that was quarried at Bowman’s Hill and some that was removed from area stone fences. Visitors love to see the 14-mile vista of the Delaware River (shown above).
Upper Makefield still has 12 of the 36 covered bridges built in Bucks County. The Van Sandt Covered Bridge (sometimes spelled Van Sant) was built in 1875 and is near Bowman’s Hill Tower. There are rumors that Van Sant’s bridge could be haunted. The bridge is allegedly a “cry baby bridge” where a young woman killed her child and then herself. Her cries, the story goes, still can be heard at night.
